Life in Ancient Greece. After studying Greek culture all week, can you imagine what it would have been like to have actually lived during those times? At your current age, the girls in our class would have been married and the boys would be in the military for the last three or four years at least! Personally, I've always thought one of the most fascinating aspects of Greek culture lies in the study of their religion, what we know as Greek Mythology. What do you think it would have been like to believe your fate rested in the hands of a group of all-powerful beings who couldn't even get along with each other most of the time?! After briefly reviewing the character of each of the major gods and goddesses of Ancient Greece earlier this week, write a journal entry describing which gods or goddesses you would have wanted to be your patron. From which ones would you have sought support and protection and which ones would you have wanted to avoid at all costs? Use your graphic organizer from class to help you remember the specific realms and character traits of each deity; you will want to use that information in your answer!! If you need a refresher, I posted the links to the videos here on the blogsite, right below the Weekly Schedule column. Use your imagination and try to picture your life in Ancient Greece! As we begin to read our first Greek Tragedy this week, we are about to see just how influential and interfering the Greeks believed the gods could be! It's going to be awesome!! Just wait and see! :)
well i would be good in the military because whatever is in my hands no one could touch me but that would not be the life that i want because i love to wake up in the morning seeing my dad and my dog but i want to go in the marines

nightrider and booboo: Look back at your graphic organizer for your notes about the gods and see which ones best go along with your interests and plans. Military interests, perhaps the god of war? Relationship issues, perhaps the goddess of love or the one for marriage and family. Look at your notes and be specific in your entries! Show me what you have learned!! :)
ReplyDeleteI would definitly want either Hades, Ares, or Apollo. Apollo because he's the god of music and the god of healing. So I wouldn't have to worry about getting hurt. And I would like Ares to be my patron because he's the god of warfare, and he has a short temper like me. I also lovve destruction and watching things blow up. And Hades because He's bitter, cruel, and always gets what he wants. He's also tempermental. I would probably avoid Zeus and Athena. Zeus because he seems untrustworthy, and Athena because i'd be afraid she'd out smart me, then kill me when i wasn't expecting it

Getting married at this age? That wouldn't be a good thing. Cause I don't like relationships as it is. I would've wanted to be Hestia. Goddess of hearth, home and fire. She was gentle of all gods and never took sides. I like to be peaceful and get along with everyone!
ReplyDeleteOut of all the Gods, I would have chosen Artemis. Goddess of the hunt. She was really into nature and I love that. She seems so strong and powerful and being the best archer on Mount Olympus is an awesome trait. I also like her morals, the virgin goddess and protector of the young, that means I would have had a good leader. Did you know almost right after her birth she helped her mother across the straits to Delos so she could then give birth to Apollo? That is a good reason making her a protector of women in labor as well.

Getting married now would be awesome! I would love it if it was the right person. I think I would want Apollo as my patron. Hes the god with the most postive things going for him. Hes kind, gentle, a healer, wise, and very smart. I would avoid hades because no one wants to go to the underworld. At least I hope no one wants to.

what is a patron? You sait it in line 11 2nd to last word. The Greek gods that I like the most is Poseidon or Hephaestus, I like Hephaestus because I'm a pirow[pie-row](someone who likes fire)& because I like to make things. I like Poseidon because I'm a water person. The gods i would fear the most would be Hades & Zeus because Hades could drag me to the underworld at anytime & i fear zeus because he knows a lot of punisments.

After learning about the gods this week I would want to be like a Zeus. He was a powerful leader and is very known. Also I just like his weapon, or the lighting bolt, alot i thing isa pretty kool and abnormal type of weapon but is very effective. Lastly the god i would want to avoid would be without a doubt Hades. He seems like in his presence he would just send chills down your spine and scare you half to death!

Being married at that age, just the drama with a relationship is hard enough. Military at 12, they havn't even hit puberty yet, they arn't that developted or strong yet, to young! Anways, I would of liked Poseidon as my patron. He controls all sea's and that would be amazing. Go swimming whenever you wanted, control the water tempatures, help people to shore, or drown some people.

I like artemis because she protected the young and helpless, but the main reason i like artemis is because she is the goddess of the hunt. I could probably appreciate having Poseidon as my patron, not only because he is the ruler over the sea but I could also relate to him in some ways, except being devoured by Cronus of course. Having the god of the sea as my patron would be an adventure not easily forgotten, being able to learn about and explore the mysterious and beautiful waters of the Earth. And as the Athenian politician, Themistocles, said long ago, "He who commands the sea has command of everything." I believe having control of the sea with Poseidon would grant even the weakest of all humans great power. Though not a threat to us, Hades would prove to be a god to be feared. I would not want to fall victim to any death and to have to face Hades in the underworld, no matter the occasion. If I had Poseidon, or any Greek god, on my side then I do not believe that I would have to worry about death coming to me anytime soon.

ReplyDeleteWell, I honestly love the greek goddess Aphrodite and Hera. Hera, because in roman mythology she was Juno, and I love That. But protection wise, I would like either ares or poseidon. The one I'd stay away from most likely would be hades or Hephaestus. Hades because he is the god of the underworld, and that's just not how I roll. Hephaestus because of what I learned about him last year. He is kinda scary in my opinion. Okay I'm done with typing (:
I don't think I would've enjoyed having someone else contoling my fate and if I absolutely had to pick one I think I would pick Hestia because one she never took a side during the war and she is the protector of home, hearth, and fire. At home is supposed to be the place that you go to after work, school, job and it is always there and your family is there as well and if that place isnt protected and not cared for then it will be destroyed. I for one don't want my home to be destroyed so I wouldve probably looked to Hestia for protecting my home where my family and I live. There are also, others I would truely just aviod and that would be Hades because I don't want to have to live in the underworld and it doesnt look like a fun place to really be anyway and yea there are other things I like about other gods and godess but out of all I would trust Hestia.....! :)

I would most likely like to have Athena on my side, the goddess of war, because she is very wise and very creative. She is the type of person i would like to be like. The one god/goddess I wouldn't want to be like would be Aphrodite. Yea, she may be the goddess of love and beauty but honestly, she's disgusting. I would never want to be like her because she's very manipulating. I mean she gets jealous if anyone is more beautiful than her. Example: Medusa told her she was more beautiful than Aphrodite and then Aphrodite has a fit and gives her snake hair. If she wouldn't of done that, then many people wouldn't be turned into stone.
ReplyDeleteI don't think it would be much different to be ruled by the Greek gods and goddesses than our government, because they can't get along half the time either. If I were to choose someone to be my patron I would chose Athena, because she is the goddess of wisdom. It'd be nice to be around someone who knows what their doing, and she is also the goddess of craftsmanship. Everyone loves crafts (: I think it would be fun to live in ancient Greece... but it would also be scary because you would have to worry about the Gods fighting and killing everyone.

If I was to live back in acient greece knowing my fate was in the hands of people who i didn't know much of i had just heard about them would be scary and i would feel very weary of the whole situation. But if i had a decision of who i would want on my side it would have to be Athena. Athena being wise and i would like to learn from her and gather as much wisdom from her as i could for myself. As for someone i would try to avoid, it would have to be Hades. Because he is short tempered and someone who rules the underworld and death i dont think i would want to associate myself with him much.

ReplyDeleteIf i were to live in the ancient greece and i would probably be a folower of hestia(ROMAN NAME:Vesta). hestia is the most peaceful god and im not all that violent myself. now the one god i would avoid besides hedes would ares. ares is the god of war. the spartans followed this god hence the movie 300. i wouldnt want to have to go to war all the time and then prais a lord for death of soldiers, its just not humane to me. having a closer relation with a family or hometown is better thing to do.

There's so many that i'd be next to impossible to stay in favor with all of them, especially being at war and all as a soldier. One god that would be critical for me to please would be Ares. As a soldier, it'd be imperative to have the god of war on my side.

My favorite mythology character is Pallas Athena. So she'd definitely be on my side. I thinkn it's be pretty sweet to have Zeus as somewhat of a protector,too. I think there's a lot of gods that would be intersting to have as an advantage but those are my favorite.

I know hercules killed his family but it wasnt his fault, hera was jealous of zeus' mystress' son. hercules loved his family unconditionally and when he relized what he did he buried his family and went looking for the gods forgivness. thus comes the twelve labors, hercules puts him self in great danger to perform twelve risky deeds to get his hands clean. Hercules would have never hurt anyone if it werent for hera. thats why i would go to hercules because i would know that i could trust him and that he would try to help me to the best of his ability.

Out of all the gods I would want Zeus to be my patron, because back then power meant a lot. The more power you had the higher you were in society. Zeus being the most powerful would be able to assist more then others.
