Online Journal Entry 6
For this week's journal entry, let's work on something a little different: Our Powers of Persuasion! I have a dilemma; last year, my students read Oedipus in class--just like we did--and then performed Antigone. We divided up the play into Acts (remember, Greek dramas were not so divided) and assigned everyone one speaking part. The students had a couple of days to rehearse, and then everyone performed their scene for the class! However, I know we have several students this year who are uncomfortable speaking in front of a group. So before I make this decision, I would like each of you to weigh in informing me of your opinions. Tell me: Would you rather perform Antigone in front of the class, or would you rather continue with the Readers' Theatre format (same rules apply, everyone reads). Performing the play can be a really fun way to interact with the text on another level; but if I have to force it upon you (like in the picture above), it will be misery for everyone. In your journal entry, tell me your opinion as well as WHY you feel that way, and then I will let you know what our plan for next week is! Be PERSUASIVE, be PASSIONATE, be PREPARED to write a full PARAGRAPH, as always! It may well be chosen on a class by class basis; remember, either way, some parts are large and some are very small. Whichever we choose, it is still going to be AWESOME!! Seriously, it's Greek Tragedy; how could it NOT be?! :)

I think performing in front of the classs would be fun because i have no problem with talking in front of people. I think that if we did perform in front of the class i would learn more and it would just overall work out better for my learning. But that's my opinion and i know there are those shy people out there that are thinking the total opposite of my opinion so i guess we will have to see. Either way im fine but i just think perfoming could be a new fun way to learn.

ReplyDeleteI wouldn't exactly like preforming a little scene of the play. I would be nervous and a little scared. Though, I would love to see what some of the other kids would come up with in my class! I think it would be very fun and entertaining! So, I vote yes! We should preform! For all the people that might be a little nervous, like me, it will give them a chance to face their fears!
I Would Love to do the Play and act it out. it would be a great way to remeber the thing that happened and a way of haveing fun during class .
ReplyDeletei think it would be way fun if we act it out and not just read siting in are deasks . I am in Drama so i would love that .

I think that we should do the play so we all would be invovled. When we are reading not everyone gets a chance to read in the same day. So when some of us dont read we either sleep or text people. And thats not a good thing. If we do a play we will be distracted from doing all that stuff. So i vote that we do the play.
ReplyDeleteI would love to do the play but would we still read from the book or would we have to memorize? that could be a problem haha. I think it would be more interactive and it would keep kids awake..
ReplyDeletecheechNchong
ReplyDeleteMy personal opinion is that we should perform the play while reading it. Because the more interesting the work the more involved students will be interested in working. But i also think you shouldn't because some other kids get stage freight, or just prefer reading as a class. But personally I wouldn't mind helping you out with performing this play. As long as its just our class that is watching us.
Doing a theatre type of act would be much more fun! :) A lot more emotion behind the tragedies would be great, too. Cooperating to another degree is what I would look foward too. It should be fun! I think ancient tragedies shouldn't be boring. They should be romantic!
ReplyDeleteM_123
_cheer47_I think we should continue Readers' Theatre format because I think doing the play would just waist time with all the horseplay, i mean get real, look at our second hour haha. But also I feel like we learn better by reading outloud and everyone having a part and it really helps me when we stop and discuss what just happened in the play for a couple minutes
ReplyDeleteWow, great to hear these opinions!! Antigone is a Greek drama just like Oedipus and set is up in the same fashion, only 2-3 actors on stage at the same time, chorus, chorus leader etc., so everyone will still not read everyday. But it is nice to know what people are trying to get away with when they are not reading; thanks for that, Bubbles96! And memorizing will definitely not be required; however, one student last year did choose to memorize his part and got some MAJOR bonus points for it!! :)
ReplyDeleteI think that we should try the plays because one we will still learn as much as we would if we did readers theatre. Two I think it would be fun for all the classmates to show off what drama or improve skills they have and it would be a great way for all of the classmates to get together and learn something new about on another. Three it would also make a great and new way to learn about greek mythology and no offense but it can be boring and in plays we can make it our own fun and interesting and exciting. So, n my conclusion and opinion I don't think it would be a bad thing to try the plays because it would be boring to just sit in a desk and end up having to read. lol :)
ReplyDelete~Sophie12
I don't like performing in front of the class, so I would like to do readers theater, unless the book is as boring as the last one. If antigone is a good book I would like performing it in class or readers theater. If we perform it in class I want a small part.
ReplyDeleteOU-Sooner
I would rather us read in class. Because I do not like performing in front of people. I would be fine with it if everyone else performed and I did not. I also don't like reading because some people are really boring to listen to. So I guess I am neutral to the whole thing
ReplyDeleteRiku
In my opinion, I would prefer to act it out. I enjoy getting up and taking up character, bringing excitement and emotion to text. Reader's theater, although comfortable, is somewhat boring and blan. If you can recall Romeo and Juliet last year, it's pretty evident that I enjoy a loose play set up more than reader's theater. I understand that some people are shy also, so i would generously settle with Reader's Theater to keep them from leaving their comfort zone.
ReplyDeleteI don't want to act it out because i don't like acting things out in front of people and i don't think you learn anything about the topic. But if we did it i don't think i would have a option, so i would proble do it anyway.
ReplyDelete-Hi652
i would rather to do the acting thing bc we are up and being active. plus we wont get bored sitting there listening to people read. but i am probley going to be nervous getting up infront of everyone but i will get over it.
ReplyDeleteI think acting would be fun, but NOT for me. I am terrified of asking teachers questions, let alone acting in front of the class! I feel that everyone reading the book would help me understand it better. Acting it out would just confuse me. If I had to act... I might confuse everyone else as well. Acting is not my thing!

ReplyDeleteI dont think that my class would be a good class for performing the play. My class have a few people that get distracted easily and cant keep serious and goof off 24/7. If it wasnt for that then i think its a great idea to perform this play. I dont have a problem reading my lines infront of the class as long as i have someone up there with me who has lines before or after me. Standing up there by myself makes me nervous and scared. im a people person not a keep to myself person!
I think we should do the play. It would be fun to see what people do for their parts. The only down side is the kids who don't do anything & when u ask them to do something they wine & complain!! : ( For the people who have stage fright it will help them get over their fears. I think you should give the biggest part to the 3 year old babies (the winners & complainers). If they complain give them a 0 for their grade on this assignment. : b I think it would serve them right because it GETS REAL OLD REAL FAST!!
ReplyDeleteblackwolf
If I say so myself, not trying to boast or anything, but I would say that I am fairly good at acting. That being said, I still would not be able to perform in front of the class. On top of being nervous when all eyes are on me, I start to slip under pressure. By then it is just me with a blank stare on my face about to ask for my line. If you forced us to act out like that I suppose I'd do it since I had to. If I had to choose between the individual reading of the parts or acting it out in front of the class then I would most definitely choose the prior. I do like acting though as long as I'm not under a lot of pressure.
ReplyDeleteI think that it's a good idea to let us do a play. It would definitely help to keep me awake! I find acting things out to be much more fun than just reading it. It would also get some students to stay awake as well!!!
ReplyDelete~ VergeOfInsanity ~
I think that performing in front of the whole class would be great! It would be fun and it would also prepare you for public speaking. You know, for like college stuff. I think it would just all around make the class more fun and as a class we would somehow become closer I guess. THINK OF THE CHILDREN MRS. SNOW!!
ReplyDeleteI think We should read aloud! Honestly if we do the play it'll be pointless to much messing around will happen. on top of that not everybody likes acting plays out so a lot of people will just be monotone and boring. while if we read its just more relaxed less pressure and we get to have a little more fun in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteXxlovesxxpiexX
ReplyDeleteI honestly would rather do the way we did Oedipus, because I am definitely not a fan of standing in front of everyone and I'd probably start laughing. Also I get all weird and can't say my lines right, or memorize them. But I probably am outnumbered on the choice so I have no decision.
i do not mind what we do in this class because as long as you do it and have a positive attitude you will get through it real quick but acting or reading is no problem long as i get it and have all the things that i need and there is no problems with me being in a group.
ReplyDeleteI have nothing against performing in front of the class. I think it would be really fun. Also I think that people will gain more self confidence if they are put out of their comfort zone. Being a cheerleader I started to not be scared to get up in front of people and talk. I think it's important for people to e able to publically speak.
ReplyDelete-- Dare4Distance
In my opinion, I think we should perform the play in front of the class. Most of the people in class don't really pay attention when we just read, and some even fall asleep. I also think their should be options of smaller parts for people who aren't really comfortable with speaking in front of people, such as myself. Other than that, I think the play idea would be really entertaining.
ReplyDeleteI don't want to preform anything infront of the class. I would much rather read out of the book like we did last time. I have a question well based on what i"ve read like other peoples comments it looks like we are going to preform well does that mean like if most of the people in one class wants to preform is only that class going to preform or if most of one class doesnt preform does that mean that class isnt going to preform or if the majority of all your students in all the classes want to preform is everyone in each class going to preform? I dont really understand what were gonna do>
ReplyDeleteI think, That if we did do it infront of the class. It helps build character. But, I have to say, and the children who are nervous about it. Maybe we should wait until the whole class is more.. Open, Because we all know. only about half the class is talkative infront of everyone. I say we wait until after 1st semester or even wait till our skills are better, more or less. Also if this technique doesnt work, Than plan B and we will go infront of the whole class. Thats my opinion.

ReplyDeleteI would really enjoy public speaking, but would also be a tad nervous when I get up to the front of the class. I think it's a good way for people to get to know you better, too! With all the cool kids in our class, I wouldn't doubt that for a second. So we should all be confident, get up to the front of the room, and get this assignment done right!
I don't like performing in front of class. so i would rather do the theatre reading, and I think it is more fun that way. But the play could be more entertaining and i won't get bored.

ReplyDeleteI think we should do both. It would be so much fun. Some of us could act it out, as the others read. I think it would give us a differnt view. Like us acting in deffernt parts. I think we should do both. It would be soo much funn..
honestly i do not think preforming this in front of the class would help. honestly i just despise preforming verbally.:( reading it is enough to understand it. i understand that some people want to do the play, then you do have to think you have people that hate that sort of thing. please think of the other half of the students. maybe give a way to get around having to do the play, because im fine with reading aloud but i just really do not like the idea of plays.
ReplyDeleteWell I think that it could be fun if we did that but it probably wouldnt go very smooth with our class. I would do it if I had a small part because im not the greatest at reading out loud. So I think I would like it if I got a small part. I also don't think it would work that well because some of the lines are super long.
ReplyDeleteWings12
I personally HATE speaking infront of an audience of people. I think we should do the readers theatre cause people don't stare at you when you talk as when your infront of the class and they only look at you! I get really choked up and have hot flashes... not good! Very nerve wrecking for me!/: Soo i think we should just stick with the readers theatre! Please!

So, I’m not one who likes to perform in front of the class. In my opinion, I like what we have been doing. The play, reading in class. That way, everybody gets to participate without having to do in front of the class. Maybe not everybody likes to read, but if they want a good grade they will have to deal with it. It's better than performing in front of the class anyways.

I personally don't think that we should perform these in front of the class. I honestly wouldn't mind if we had to, but you said that it could help up understand it better. But if no one in the class is wiling to perform to the best of their abilities, then how could we possibly fully understand this play. It would actually do us a disservice to perform a scene because some of the students lack enthusiasm. And that's why I don't think we would benefit from this activity.

I would like to act this book out cause i think the class would be more involved instead of becoming tired and laying around. I think if we acted it would take action in all stduents and make alot of joey of every act. It would get everyone to pay attention and listen much better. From SuperMan10
ReplyDeleteWell it's already too late but I personally wouldn't have minded either way. I did this all the time last year and I volunteered to play parts in these types of scripts all the time with Natasha. xD I always enjoyed it. :)
ReplyDeletei think acting it out would be alot of fun, because i like talking and moving around and being active, i think that acting it out it is easier to rember the story. rather than just reading it.
ReplyDeleteIm my opinion i like to do the skits in front of the class because it is more intertaining and gives more excitement to the class. I like that idea better because it is way better than setting in your desk falling asleep reading out of the book, just saying. Really there is'nt anything to be afraid of, your suppose to have fun while you doing it. Try to enjoy it. =)
ReplyDeletei would like to preform infront of the class. it would be very very fun. it will help us not be afraid to speck in front of the class. it will aslo let us get to know our class mates. we also can bond to gether too.
ReplyDeletepersonally i would rather read in front of the class even tho i do read slower than I'm trying to talk it does get hard it is still fun to interact in front of people. there is not much difference in the two. but the previous one is bland and we don't know what are lines are going to be so it is easier to mess up.
ReplyDeletei think we should do the readers theathre because its better and stuff
ReplyDeletegibson
This is a bit overdue but I enjoyed acting it out in class. I think it helps you actually realize what's going on and understand it. But when we read Oedipus I think having different people read different parts everyday also helped with paying attention. I don't know about anyone else but when other people are reading I don't retain ANYTHING unless I read along..
ReplyDeleteThis entry is late but i would rather perform the plays then just read them. It gets me involved with the class and its really fun!
ReplyDeletecheeslover
I think that reading the book and not playing it was not as fun and entertaining as it could have been. i think if we did more acting and speaking seperatly we could have focused better. I am av ble to listen better if i have something to look and listen to, but since we have already done i guess it was fine the way we did...

I love to perform so tthere for i would love to perform infront of the entire class. Although i am doing this just to make up work and already performed infront of the class i would love to say it was alot more fun then just reading it outloud. THe costumes and acting was great. I believe everyone had a amazing time!(:

ReplyDeleteEven though we already performed it, i believe it was a fun experience for me. It helped me get over my fear a little bit and i had fun doing it. At first, i really hated the idea but it turned out to be a cool experience.
i would like to still keep doing the Readers' Theatre format because people get nervous when all the attention and focus is on them in cluding my self i dont like it when every one is just staring at me and in readers theatre everyone in into the book so when you read people arent really focused on you thats why i think we should still do readers theater -Flash
ReplyDeleteI think we should stick with the acting cause its a fun activity and its someting different for us to do as a class. Also, the only way to get over the fear of speaking in front of people, is to do it.
