Online Journal Entry 8

“What is wonderful about great literature is that it transforms the man who reads it towards the condition of the man who wrote.” ~E. M. Forster
This week, we are beginning a unit on Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird. Did you know this novel has been banned frequently throughout our country in the past fifty years since it was published?  Even today, it inspires strong feelings in all those who read it--some of whom love it and some of whom hate it.  You will be able to decide for yourself in the coming weeks, but for now, tell me about a book that you already love. Is there any book that's had a significant impact on your life to date?  What about a favorite novel that you could read again and again anytime you have the time and inclination?  Is there a book you have any fond memories of reading in school?  Something you had to read for class and found it wasn't as bad as you thought it might be?   Come on, whether you love to read or not, tell me about a book you've read (not the one you described  for your book review unless you are going to tell me something new about it and how it has changed your life!) and what it has meant to you.  :)

  4. A book that I like is called ill love you forever I'm pretty sure but my mom and grandma used to read it to me when I was little and I think its a good book because it shows children that your parents love you and you'll always be their baby and they will always take care of you and when you get older you should show that same love to them and even your own children in the future. My favorite line in the book is " ill love you forever ill love you for always as long as I live my baby you'll be." -ilovejordan10/11/10

  5. One book that i really liked and could read again would be the book called "heaven is for real." the book talks about a small boy whose dad is a pastor and had a lot of problems going on in his life when he started to ask God why all of these bad things were happening to him. during the midst of all of his personal life trials his son gets deathly sick, and after weeks in the hospital he dies during sugary. miraculously he came back to life and after he had fully recovered he told his parents about the wonderful sights and sounds he had experienced while sitting on Jesus's lap. The book really encourages me to push on even when your going through trials, it reminds me that there is more to live for than now...

  6. A book that has had a impact on my life was 90 minutes in Heaven, this book is very touching and has affected my way's of thinking about god and all that good stuff. It is about a man who dies instantly in a head on car crash and he goes to heaven and sees all of his dead relatives, but he doesnt make it past the gates, they are all waiting outside the gates smiling and imbracing him. Then after 90 minutes he his revived by the ambulance people(forgot there name). Then later after his recovery he rights this book about his experience in heaven and what it is like.

  7. My two favorite novels would be Jesus Freak and Silver Creek Falls. Both contain great figurative language and description. I would love to read those again. Silver Creek Falls is about a woman and her daughter and husband live in a dreary town of Silver Creek and killings and what not are starting to happen. Jesus Freak tells about all those who lost their lives or of bad things happen to them because of their faith and commitment to Christ. Very Inspirational!!

  8. I did not know that to kill a mockingbird had been banned frequently throughout our country in the past fifty years. I don't really love any books because I don't like to read. There has not been any book that has had an impact on my life. One book that I read again and again was Sticks. It's about pool and I read in in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade because it was easy and I used for my book reports. Every book I've ever read in class was boring and I didn't like any of them. The books we read in class were stupid because Greek Mythology is the dumbest subject ever. Romeo and Juliet is stupid too. Animal farm is dumber. Romeo and Juliet is barely even in English and animal farm.Animal Farm is dumb because talking animals aren't real. We are in 10th grade and it is time to grow up.

  10. Wenny Has Wings has been my favorite book so far. Its been a long time sense I last read it but I remeber I cried and laughed. The story was about a sister and brother. They both get hit by truck while walking but only Will comes back to life his sister Wenny doesnt make it. The whole book is him writing in a journal about how he overcomes this struggle in his life.

  11. One of many book's I have read that have inspired me is a book called "Edward's Eye's". It's about these two siblings, the other one loves his little brother to pieces and treats him like he would his old child. Even though he's only 10. Anyways, the little brother dies in the end and what I have learned from that book is the impossible happens. You always have to be ready for anything that is headed your way, good or bad. No matter what happens, you'll get through it and it'll lead you some place special that you'll love! You just have to accept the unexpected. No matter how hard it may be.

  12. I absolutely loved The Notebook! I cry every time I read it! The Notebook makes me stop and think about everything, and not take things for granted. It also makes me think that love can exist at a young age! I read The Notebook the summer after 8th grade. I decided that I should probably read a book cause I hadn't for a year and a half! It was a great way to start up reading again. I was so into it and never wanted to put it down. I could read it over and over again I loved it so much!

  17. I read The Notebook, by Nicholas Sparks, and it is one of the most amazing books I've ever read. I could read it over and over, and watch the movie over and over. It makes me think about, make sure you tell the person you love, you love them, because you never know if they will get alzheimer's and forget... It's a sad concept, but it can happen to anyone.

  20. A book that I absolutely loved was "The Christmas Clock" I read this book of course around Christmas time and it got me in the mood for Christmas that year. My grandma gave me the book for some reason and even though it sounds like it would be a boring book it was surprisingly really good and I would recommend it to others who would like maybe a holiday book to read. This book always brings back memories of what Christmas is really about and this was just all around a great book.

  21. I'd probably have to go with Looking For Alaska. I got it several years ago for Christmas and I've readf it literally over 50 times. I don't know what it is about that book that just draws me in but I'm thinkning that it's because it's about people around my currwnt age and grade. Although, when I read it the first time I was a bit younger so it made me invision what my teenage live would kinda be like and the types about drama and things of that nature..

  22. There is one book that i read, back in 6th grade, called A Place Called Home. Its about a girl who had to take care of her two sibiligs when her mom just ups and disappears. She had a really rough time and she took care of them for quiet some time. I can kinda relate to her. I had to practically raise my siblings. Until my mom lost us and then she got us back and she changed completely. Now shes always with us and takes us places. And we now have an actual kinda normal family. We are all happy now. :)

  23. I book i had read for honors english last year was called Snow Flower and the Secret Fan. I enjoyed this book because it told about the life of a woman in the early years of China. And how they would be married off based on how well their feet took to the binding. The smaller their feet the higher of marriage they could recieve. This book was memorable to me just because of the detail and as i read i could feel how she felt and how the things she went through in her life and the pain took a tole on her.

  24. I liked the book "Eragon", "Inkheart" and "The hobbit"..... But my faveourite is "The Thief Lord" because is inspires kids to have fun in life and live life to the fullest. because soon before you know it, it will be all over. I like reading this book over and over. I now want to visit Venice Italy after reading this book and see all the cool sculptures, churches and go on a boat to the Islands.

  25. I'm not the type of person who reads a lot but I remember reading The Tale of Despereaux. Either my teacher Mr. Conway from fourth grade or Mrs. Ipock from fifth grade read that book to my class. I know it might sound cheesy but that book gave me a real eye opener because one person who was different from everyone and nobody got could be a true hero. When your ten or eleven, things like this are really important to you. Hahaha :D

I LOVE to read, one of my favorites being the Harry Potter books. I know this isn't exactly one of the questions up there, but i think it isn't right to band books. I know that Harry Potter has been band from some school library, and i don't think its right! Books like To Kill a Mockingbird and Harry Potter are very good books. To Kill a Mockingbird teaches us, or at least me, how life really was for people going through the civil rights movement. Also, how badly some others were treated. There are some very good lessons to be learned in this book! For Harry Potter, people might disagree on some of the things that are in it, but if you disagree don't pick up the book and read it! The Harry Potter book are what helped me start reading on my own. So, all in all, i think its wrong to band books. Oh, I love To Kill a Mockingbird! :D

  30. I've read so many books that it's hard to just describe one, but I will try to anyway.
One of my favorite books is actually the "Alex Rider" series. I never really liked spy movies, like the James Bond series, but I really injoyed these for some reason. Part of the appeal is that Alex is only about 15 or 16 when this series starts. Though I could be wrong, as I have not read the series for a while. He was trained from birth for this as his father was a spy. He goes on all sorts of dangerous missions, barely making it out alive.
If I would tell anymore I would ruin the series for you, if you wanted to read it that is! XD

The book I remember reading the most in school was Captain underpants. I always thought that it was a good series for kids to read, and it always gave me a good laugh now and then. I actually read them all the way up to 8th grade, in fact. When I got to 9th grade, though, it became to low a level for me to be reading, and I had to progress to a higher level. It sort of disappointed me, but deep inside I was excited to take on the new challenge of reading new books. Now, I really liked reading Oedipus, and To Kill a Mockingbird. Nice choices of books, Mrs. Snow!

  32. Well I'm starting my sisters keeper and I think this book will change my life by seeing how other people deal with a family that has canser. Some people I think dont know how important it is when someone has canser, and how much those people need help at these times........... Well I dont what else to say in this blog so i guess I'm done blogging.

  33. I haven't read as many books as i would like to. and i want to but i never no what to pick when I'm in a library. I've read a lot of James Patterson Books. I love his Books but the best book i have read so far would have to be Ship wreck. i kind of found my own genre of books i like to read. I'm not into real world stuff i like other world different realities kind of books. i thought Romeo & Juliet was going to be horrible but i enjoyed the reading and story line of it.

  34. I really liked the last book of the Twilight saga, Breaking Dawn. It never got boring, and always kept me wanting to read more. I really liked how all of the characters were around my age because it made them more relatable. I read this book last year, and am halfway through it this year. Id have to say, its one of my favorite books.

I read a book called "A Child Called It" and it changed my views on what child abuse really is. It was about a boy that got abused by his mother. She would make him sleep in the basement, and she locked him in the bathroom with a bucket of ammonia. She did other horrible things but i just cant recall them at the moment but this book really changed my mind about my mom.

  36. When I was in fifth grade my English teacher started to read the first book of the Maximum Ride series. I loved these books and continued to read them, the adventure was so exhilarating. I spent most of my free time reading while my brothers were playing video games and other stuff. I feel like reading them made my vocabulary better at the time because they were advanced books for my age. I loved them and I would read them again anytime!

  37. Hmmm.. I would have to say that a book that has had a big impact on my life would probably have to be Charlie st. cloud because it talks about how a man lost his brother when he was a teenager and he put all his feelings and thoughts about that incident in a novel that truly touches your heart from the first chapter to the very last. I could read Charlie st. cloud over and over again and still feel the sensation you get when you read something you've never read before, it is truly a great book. I remember when I was in the first and second grade, some people would come to our classes and read the Dr. Who books and the way they added tone in the books it always made me enjoy them. Well I didnt think i would like the book 'How to kill a mokingbird' but since i've read it its really put alot of perspective on things that I thought I knew but relized I didnt know anything at all.

  41. I've read three really good books and the one I like most is probably Killing Mr. Griffen. Its a exciting book. I always looked forward to reading it because there was always something new. It's a book about these teenagers that pull a prank on a teacher they hate and the prank goes bad. When I was reading the book I always thought, how far would I go to pull a prank on my teacher, but not as far as them.

  42. The book A Child Called It was a book that had a big impact in my life. The book talked about how a child was abused and was nothing to his family. I don't believe in that. No person should be treated like that, no matter what! It made me want to treat people so much better because, I haven't lived their life and I don't know what they have been through.

  43. I recall reading The Giver, the renowned book about dystopian society, sometime in my elementary years. Though the time I read it was probably more than eight years ago, I still remember almost every little bit of it to this day. Most areas of the book I was confused about but it seems like I understood the major parts fairly well, perhaps my perception of the world as a child was broader than I had remembered it. I forget the more I try to remember content pertaining to that book, odd how that works because I recall it being a very good novel.

  46. A book that i really like is The Outsiders by SE Hinton. I like the book because i can relate to it, because just like ponyboy at one point in time i was being raised by my older siblings too. It is kind of ironic that my english teacher had us read this book while that was happening in my life. Not that bad but still them sort of having to be my parents. Not only can I relate to it like that but also the society split up between the rich and the poor grant it I am not poor but you still see that in society all the time.- Tricheco

  47. My favorite book that I have read(out of like five total that ive read in my life) would have to be Hatchet by a guy that is nameless to me as of like 5 minutes ago. I dont really think that it applies to my life. probably because im not deserted in Canada. but its a super good book. Ive read it like three times and each time i read it again it gets even better than the last time. its the only book ive ever read and actually enjoyed i think. not to sound like some kid that plays video games all day or something like that, but yeah, i think its the only book that i have wanted to read over and over again. in fact, i loved it so much that i even bought the rest of the series of books. WITH MY OWN MONEY. well i dont really know how to relate this book with real life. so i think ill just say that... if you get trapped in the wilderness... dont... die. there ya go. words to live by. well i guess thats it.
