Online Journal Entry 10

All the people like us are 'we,' and everyone else is 'They.' ~Rudyard Kipling
"Separate, but equal." It was a phrase derived from a Louisiana law from 1890, but the thoughts behind it--and the support of it--were predominant in this country for more than 60 years after the fact. What do you think? Where there is "separate," can there be "equal?" Could it be a different answer for differing situations? Why or why not?

  1. I really don't think seperate but equal is really possible. Because the white people had nice bathrooms and foutains and such but im sure the black peoples things that were publically segregated weren't in as good of condition as the white people's things. I think the treatment of the African Americans was unfair because they really weren't allowed to do or have anything. I think it's ridiculous how if a black man looked at a white woman he could be hung just for a glance at someone. I think I guess it could be okay if the equal part was actually true like if a white man had nice clean bathrooms to use and if a black man had the same but in this situation that wasn't the case so i still find it unfair to be seperate. Because everyone has rights as it said in the consitution. -ilovejordan10/11/10

  2. Where there is "separate," i believe there cant be "equal". Many places are seprerate like schools, jobs,. and sports. At school you have the preps against the normal ones. At jobs and during sports you have boys against the girls. The preps at school get trearted better then the normal kids at school and get favored. Some jobs wont let girls do certain stuff because there girls. The sports team believes football is for boys not girls and cheerleading is mostly for girls. so therefor there is no equal rights when you are seperate.

  3. I think they shouldn't have judge them by their color. What if they were in that situation that the African Americans were in? Would they have liked it? If they would've put themselves in the other peoples shoes, maybe history would be so different.

  4. It can greatly differ in many situations. Black men weren't treated as well as white men and it's total bull. I think that some people are jerks and need to get over themselves. Separate but equal is practically impossible. Nowadays racism is still around. Back then,"separate" was the only thing really "accomplished". Equal was never really there.

I honestly don't think there can be seperate and equal in the same place. If you're separating yourself from other people that aren't just like you, you're not making yourself equal with them. I'ts not right to have done this to them, they're people just like us and deserve the same amount of respect we get from each other.

  8. Serperate but equal is very possible in some cases..take the 3rd and 4th grade buliding(the east and the west). The difference with the blacks and whites was blacks didnt get equal treatment. They got the lower end of things.

  9. I don't think there are equal rights when it comes to separation. Sometimes I do think its fair at school when the boys will carry the heavy things and the girls carry the light. I do get a little frustrated when we play dodge ball and it's girls against boys. They have an unfair advantage.Other colors do get treated a little differently though. Even though it's getting a little better I don't believe it's fair.

  10. i think that there is two different answers to the question cuz you cant be seperate but equal. you could just be seperate and thats it or you could just be equal. but in other cases i think that it could be both. so thats what i think about when it comes to seperate but equal.

  11. I think at one point we could be Equal if people in forced the rules .But there would be alot of copitision with everything from sports to girl or boys.

  12. Seperate but equal is a meaning that lacks logic, something that seems lost now-a-days. White and black people are no different. They're people that just happens to have different skin color. Evidence that shows that seperate but equal doesn't work is...there's no segregation now!

I do not approve of having "seperate" but "equal" and anywya if there is seperate there is no equal there is no such thing because if your seperated from schools, society, and the public then you cant be considered equal because you are not treated the same in any way shape or form and even if there were other situations it would be the same because everyone has there opinions and then if there opinion is that colored people should be seperate then it is the same as before and I consider everyone as equal wether where they live, or where they come from, what they look like, how they talk, it makes no difference to me.

  14. Seperate but equal is not equal at all. If it was equal blacks wouldn't have to use a totally different. The only thing that is different is the color of there skin. I don't get why people can't see that? It frustrated me when people discriminate all types of race no matter what it is. Sometimes they didn't have a chocie. I just wish that people will stop judging other people, because if you found out that some one was judging you. You would want to do something about it. So just keep all of your thoughts to your self and leave other people alone.

  15. I really do not like what they use to do. Racism to me is like the worst ever in my eyes. Yeah, I USE to say the "n" word. Now I do not let my family or anybody around me say it. All it is is a skin color. No, it should not be differant in differant situations. I believe, everybody should see it the same way I do. I know that will not happen, but there's nothing I can do, but to at least try and help them out.

"Separate but equal" was supposed to mean that everyone has equal right as we do today, but it never happened back then. There was still racism rampant, and the government (and the population) still didn't treat black people, mexicans, or other races fairly. They kept their terrible ways of treating them as inferior people. Why would we ever think that way about them, anyway? Some of them today, in some ways, are superior than we are. Some became the greatest athletes of all time. Others became successful in other ways, but I can't think of them at the moment. All in all, racism is morally wrong. It is NOT NICE.

  17. I dont think that their are equal rights when it comes to seperation...When boys get to do more then the girls just cause the boys dont think that the girls can handle it.. Its really bugs me also when people get judged by their race. I just wish that people would LEARN to be NICE to EACH OTHER and not KEEP their THOUGHTS to THEMSELFS...

  18. here is a comparison to this 2 siblings get TVs one gets a 54 in" and the other gets a 20 in" there are separate and both TVs. this could be bad communicated as equal when clearly not equal same goes for the separate but equal law. I personally mad that no one NO ONE fixed this within the first few years i mean come on equal means ===== not you both get dinner tonight you get raman and you get a steak dinner. i know it was a different time. but i still having trouble seeing how they see. on thing we can never do, is to see how they see people and laws.

  19. Where there is sepetate there is not equal. If you seperate white and black people obviously hey aren't equal. I don't think there should have been seperate but equal because the only thing different about white and black people is the color of their skin.

  20. I dont think seperate but equal is really possible because if you are separating yourself from other people, youre not really treating them equally. In my opinion, I think everybody should be treated equal, regardless of their color or anything else.

I believe there could be a seperate but equal but not the way they went about it. They should have changed a lot of things about this law, because if whites and blacks had seperate parks, restaurants, and other places, but were still treated equal, then it would make more sense.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Well I can't stand racism or anything like that because were all the same we just have different color skin but were all still people. I don't think that you can be separate and it was just the only regal way that could show blacks that they were "inferior" to whites. It makes me pretty mad when kids at school are racist because it not like they have a reason to judge or even hate them because a lot if tines they don't really even know any black people.

  23. No i defiantly dont think there could be separate but equal because in just the word "separate" is means split apart and you can almost infer that it isn't going to be equal. Also no i don't really think that in different situations there could be equal because it's pretty set that when it comes to black people white people don't want to have anything to do with them and being fair or equal is the last thing on their mind.

  24. Separate but equal, in my opinion, was extremely stupid. The concept technically could have work if people would have upheld to the equal part of it. On the other hand, separate but equal would be a hard concept to keep because in situations like in school systems or shows, in which it would be virtually impossible to have separate but equal facilities without having an up roaring. Even though people, in the long run, should've just sucked it up and treated everyone equally. ~ Judah Josiah

  25. In my honest oppinion, I dont think it's actually possible to be seperate but equal because if we were all seperate then we would treat eachother like dogs. Whites would trash black's stuff, black's would trash white's stuff and it would lead to alot of violence between us, just like way back when slavery and racism was at it's peak. I say it's not possible to be seperate but eqaul, but i guess it could be. The only thing it would lead to was a disrupted- violent- life threatening world. And that would lead to the down fall of the U.S.

  26. i belevie there can be "seprate" but not "equal" because in the world you have different jobs like a fry cook a mcdonalds or the president of a job but its all based on your knowledge or skills you have. in that case its not equal because some people have learning disabiltys and arnt able to learn some things that they need to to do a job.

  27. both sides should be treated equaly like if one side gets a new school the other side should get a new school that is the same size and of the same quality as the sides school

  28. I do not like segregation, becuase its not right to the others. How would you feel if just because you looked differant you couldn't do anything. I believe its not fair to the others.

  29. I think there's always a place for equal. Like you said 60 years ago seperate was the way. But as people mature and racism grows out of generations equal will be more. 60 years ago we didn't have African Americans in political jobs now we have a black president.

    ReplyDelete
  30. i think everyone should be treated equal. I dont agree with racism. 60 years ago is when people where like that, there is still people that are very racist but hopfully soon that will be no longer in the world.

  31. i think it was wrong the way they tretted the blakes. i threat them the way the should be, treat the the way you wanted to be treated. i also dont like the n word, but i can stand with it threw this book.

  32. "Separate, but equal." I dont think so,your not equal if you have separte drinking fountain, sit somewhere else then the other race. You tell me how that is equal I mean thats so dumb, you cant change your color of your skin. You shouldnt have to change who you are.

    ReplyDelete

Most of the photographs which depict "separate but equal" clearly show that separate was not equal. Water fountains, bathrooms and lunch counters marked "white" look much cleaner and nicer than those marked "colored." If people were truly "equal," then there would be no need for "separate."

  34. Really I think that there should be no serperation from colored but that's just how the world works. were there is serperation does not mean equal. I guess even the colored people got worse plates then white people and worse food then them. I am glad that it is cahnged now and colored people have the same rights as white.

  35. no i dont think separate is equal because with the whole colored thing, its not fair to colored people. they didnt deserve what happened to them. we still have the same problem now but its not as bad as it was back then.

  36. Separate and equal is possible to exist, but it is not likely to. For example, let's say one side of people are separated from another side of people. One person from one side finds a way to make it to the other side and is greeted with hospitality. This means although the people are separated, they are treated equally. It is purely based on the attitude and judgement of the person or group. Humans naturally act poorly to one that is different than themselves, and that is just how we are. Say that one side first met one from the other side and the majority did not like the way they looked, the person from the opposite side would be killed or exiled with haste.

  37. There is no Separate but equal that's like a humanity without conflict it just doesn't happen. Separate but equal doesn't work because someone or race always has the power so it wouldn't be equal at all. In cases of separate equality one race is always having to work harder like blacks having to walk longer then white just to get to school or a restroom! - Tricheco

  38. I don't really think that they can be equal. Sure th idea behin it has it's promise, but a humans do you really think that it's possible? We tend to think of ourselves before others. Of course the domanate race will have the most privlages. But that's not exactly what we, as americans, stand for. So no, I don't think we can be truly "seprate but equal."

    ReplyDelete
  39. First of all, aren't those two words completely different? I mean you can't have equality whilst having separation at the same time. That's probably the second lamest thing I've heard in my adventurous life. I think that whoever made this so called "law" was just trying to get blacks off of their back about being racist, but thought to himself "hehehe... I'm still gonna be racist." There's no getting around racism. You see, racism is like a boat. Actually I don't even think I could turn that into a good metaphor. So I guess I'll just leave it at that. So there you have it folks. Separate but equal? Nah. Doesn't exist.
