Equality may perhaps be a right, but no power on earth can ever turn it into a fact. ~Honore de Balzac
"Harrison Bergeron."  Can you imagine the horrors of living in such a society?  A society where, instead of helping and encouraging everyone be the best they can be, your talents and strengths must be covered, hidden, brought down.  If you lived in Harrison Bergeron’s world, what sorts of handicaps do you think that you might be given? Why? Why do you think these are your strengths? What sort of weaknesses do you have that would force other people to be given handicaps, to bring them down to your level?  And finally, what is your opinion of poor Hazel?  How would you feel if, in such a society, you were left perfectly alone, un-handicapped, free ... to be ordinary, unexceptional in every way?

i think that i would be forced to somehow hide my athletisism, and knowledge because im good at sports and im pretty smart. i think these are my strengths because being an athlete defines who i am and keeps me strong and in shape, and being knowledgable helps be to make good decisions. some of my weeknesses are being hot headed some times over the little things. i would never want to live in a world or society that everyone is equal, i feel that it takes away the purpose of life.

    1. Well i think that if i lived in the same world as Harrison Bergeron then i would have alot of weight on my legs because i run a lot faster than most people i know and they wouldnt allow me to be better than everyone else. Which in return would really suck because i like the fact that i run and stay in shape. If we all lived in a world where there was no competition it would be pointless to try anymore and it would be like one of those movies when everyone is the exact same and they all look alike... It would get old and creepy pretty fast

my handicap would probably be something that has to do with my brain. people say im smart just not motivated. they would probably give me the same handicap as the boy. when my train of thought gets going it usually doesnt stop. another handicap would probably have something to do with my voice i am very talented with my voice. i would never like to live in a world like hers. i would not be able to be the only one with freedom of expression. i need some variety in my life.

  4. Well if i had to be handicapped im pretty sure i would have on a mask because i dont think im ugly, or georgious but i am pretty. I would have on waights because im a fast runnier and i'm stronger than most girls. And i would have to skawk in a wierd vioce and sing horibly because singing is apart of my every day life and its my best hobbie.I'd have to give up playing the gutair and probly even give up swimming which is another one of my favorite hobbies. there world be no more real foot ball pratice in the summer when i play with some friends, and just forget about true romance scenes because that requires art and some people might get jealious of the beach being nicer than there back yard. so the world would just look like a junk yard. I dont feel bad for hazel because if i was her i woulde'nt have time to think about how i'm normal compaired to everone els cause they have handicaapps and i dont. i wouldent get jealious, mad, or even sad about it because everytime i might actually be comming up with somthing intelagent i'd forget it before the words had the chance to leave my mouth. I would think that everything in the arie was made just for me to make me happy so i woulden't have to actually try to do anything but than i wold forget that to. So i honestly beleve she has no opion and just dose what she is told is right so im happy. Cause if i might have an ideia somthings going wrong id forget again.

  5. i could not live in a world were my talents were hidden. to be honist i would probably go crazy if i could not express my self in some way. i would probably have a handycap for my music skills. im not a great singer, but im better than average. im not the best reader so, some people would have a handycap for their reading skills.

  6. i would have to have a ear radio, ankle weights, glasses, and those sacks of bird shots because im smart, agile, good eye sight, and strong. i would hate to be in a society like that because what if some one was born with extra arms/legs or without an arm/leg what would they do with that. their is no such thing as equality because people without handicaps may feel left out and people with some handicaps like the weights would just get stronger pluse the people in charge don't have any handicaps so that is just unfair.

  7. Well I dont really know what I have as my handicaps if I lived in the society like the story but I think one maybe with my size sense like at school im bigger then most kids but I dont really know... But I would probably lower the standards in a couple area so I would make a lot of peolle get handicaps.

  8. I think that i would be forced somehow to hide my intelligence, athletisism, and my curiosity. These things are what makes me who i am.. Im short tempered at times and thats another thing i think they would handicap me for. I love to live life to the fullest and if everyone was equal.. there would pretty much be no point to live life.

  9. I think I would have to have weight added to me or something to slow me down. And also I think I would have something for my brain cause Im smart sometimes. I also think other people would have to have handicapps to make them weak or short like me. I also believe that It would be nice living with no handicapps like hazel but It would be bad at the sometime.

  10. I thinki would have to be given leg weights because i run so much, and some people dont have that ability. Another handicap would probably be given to me for intelligence, eventhough im not the smartest person out there, but i dont believe that im not smart either. I dont think i would like living in a society like this, sure everyone would be equal, but i dont think we would need to go overboard on that kind of situation...In other words, i like being just a little different. Showing people what i can do, and being able to have a certain skill which would benifit me in my future.

  11. I don't think I would have any handicaps in the Harrison Bergeron world because If they tried to handicap me I would just move to another country. The only handicap I would have would be the one where you get to be an announcer on TV for people with speech impediments. I don't think that would be a handicap because I think it would be pretty cool to be an announcer on TV. I think it would be better to not have any handicaps because then you wouldn't have anything holding you back, so you could get stronger, smarter, and whatever else you are average at.

I would not be able to live in any society like that or near that. I think that if I did live in a world like that i might be given handi-caps for running because ive done track and soccer and all other sports. and if I was smart enough ha Id just play dumb haha Im not sure these are my strengths I dont know what all handi-caps I would get. I think people who have a way better and higher I.Q. would have handi-caps to be brought down to my level. and I feel bad for Hazel because it would bug me to find out who is so much more smarter or stronger than me and then for them to have to give up their own special abilities is just awful. A world like this is an awful idea!

  13. I think we would have a large supply of Handicaps. All from the ugly to the Weak, And the Handsome to the Strongness of ones life. Alot would be the same in Harrisons world towards our world. I think that people that are bigger will be given jobs of the skinny and not to educated get the jobs of the well educated other. I also think that I talk a lot so maybe they would handicap that too. I feel bad for hazel because I would imagine that everyone would be jealous of her and give her crap for not being handicapped. 1. Wow, Spiderman. You just added another whole dimension to my opinion of Hazel's situation. Every time I have read the story, I notice Hazel being slightly jealous of George for the variety he experiences through his transmitter, and I always feel sorry for her for being 'unworthy' of handicapping! But, you are absolutely correct as well. I bet everyone in that world would be completely jealous of her! It makes me feel so much better for her; it's as if her unexceptional-ness (yes, I am making up a word here) actually raises her status, though I am sure that never would have been an side-effect the HG could have foreseen! Great comment! Anybody want to add thoughts to this conversation?! Tell me what YOU think!! :D

  15. Life would be so miserable. I think I would have the same handicap as George Bergeron, because I tend to think beyond more than what I should normally (dwelling on stuff). I think Hazel is in an unfortunate situation, since she can only think in short bursts. Who can't think in their own ways? Being forced to think in the same path as the government would kill me!!!

  16. If i lived in that guys world i think i would be given a nose plug because of my incredible sense of smell. Even though my nose is clogged up right now it would be given to me. I also thing that another thing that they would give me would be messed up glasses because i have 20/20 vision and that would not be fair in that society. So those are the things that i think i would get in that world.

  18. I'm not really sure what handicaps probably an intelligence handicap, not saying that I'm a super genius or anything. Just that there are a lot of people less smart than I am, which would cause me to have to be equal to them. I'm not very strong, so that means other people would have to be handicapped to make them equal to me. If I was Hazel I probably wouldn't feel very good about myself. The government pretty much tells her, you're dumb, weak, and ugly. That wouldn't make me feel good at all.

A weakness that I have that would cause others to be handicapped would I have a weakness for reading. I'm just not displined enough. So all in all id have to say i would hate that kind of society and i like my society today where i can be myself and there is challenging competition.

  23. I wouldn't like to be handicapped for my skill because the diversity between people would slowly decrease until we are all the same. and we are meant to be different. and if people have this limitation and wasn't good at anything will never know if there talent was something great. its such a scary thought. how can making people handicapped improve a nation in anyway. i hope this doesn't happen to us.

  25. If I lived in that world I would have a few handicaps. I would have weights on my arms and legs and an ugly mask. This is because I am strong, alright at dancing, and pretty. Hazel is a normal person with nothing to reconize for. I feel terrible for her because she is has nothing special about her and not having a handicap really is an insult in my opinion. If I wasn't handicaped then I would feel not important at all. If anyone lived in that world then I'm sure people would like to have a lot of handicaps so they know behind all of it, they are something special.

And Hazel i kinda feel bad for her but in the other hand i don't; I feel bad for her because i feel like she feels left out and unworthy or useless since shes not handicaped and in the other hand I also dont feel bad for her because in the other hand she has it easy..She doesnt have to carry around heavy weights and or wear masks nor have a hearing aid in her ear.

The handicaps I think I would have are possibly the glasses that make my vision unclear, and the hearing aid that makes you forget your train of thought. I wouldn't have bags of lead bullets because I'm too weak to be able to lift anything. The handicaps people would probably have to have for me would be the weight bags to make them as weak as I am, and something that made their stomachs hurt almost constantly, because I suffer from acid reflux disease.

  32. I think I would hate that kind of world, because nobody would be able to show what they can do. That kind of society impedes development because the people with handicaps would have to stop what they do best. Aren't we supposed so let our light shine forth, not shun the light just so lesser talented people can feel good about themselves? I would probably have the sacks full of lead because I'm naturally a big kid, and I would have the earphones that send a frequency in your ear, not only because I'm a good student, but because I have a good ear for music. I wouldn't be able to harmonize in singing anymore. I probably would have some sort of handicap on my vocal chords, too. OUCH. I hope it would be on the outside of my neck and not inside my throat. I don't mean to brag or anything, but I was born with a naturally good voice. I get it from my parents, because they were both very musical in their youth, and my dad still is today. All in all, I would not like that communist-like society.

  36. I don't know if I would even be able to function in a society such as the one described in Harrison Bergeron. I would definitely be opposed of that kind of thing, and I'm pretty brash about things that seem completely unnecessary to me. I'd probably be one of the first executed... but hey, at least I would die free. It maybe a physical death, but anyone who would conform to that society would be dying as well. Their death would be mentally, socially, and emotionally. Life would seem to not be worth living. What's the point of life if you can never succeed or achieve anything? You would do the same thing over and over and expect the same result. This, according to Einstein, is the definition of insanity. So while I may be dying once, any who conform to this society have also died. They aren't people. They're puppets, manufactured and built to look exactly the same. No one person can do anything that defines us as people. I dunno, i could debate about this all day, but I know one thing for sure. I would definitely not take that kind of crap, and for that, I'd probably die but at least I died with my freedom as a person.

I think it would be terrible to live in a society that everybody was forced to be equal. Your talents and abilities is what make you you! I can't imagine being forced to wear chains, weights, head peace and what not to make me "equal". Wouldn't anybody that had any kind of education be forced to wear that thing in your ear? You would be smart enough to go through school and graduate. So I guess I would have to wear one of those things in my ear. I'm in colorguard and know how to dance, spin a flag, rifle, and saber. So, I would have any handicap that would restrict me from doing that.
I have terrible vision, wouldn't that mean anybody that has good vision and can see better then i can would have to wear glasses?
I mean absolutely no offence when I say this, but people that are our handicap(what we called handicap now, not in the story) would still be unequal? Is it possible to bring everybody down or up? What if somebody lost a leg in an accident? They still wouldn't be equal.
That society that they call equal still isn't equal. There is still a government that is higher then everybody else. People can still see and notice other people strengths by the handicaps they have...
It is so sad that Hazle has to go through that. You would think that she would be jealous of people that have handicaps just because they are above her, which proves she isn't equal...

Sometimes i can keep my mouth shut, but there are other times where i dont because i know that its not right. If you say something that you know that i will react to, and i say something to you. If you dont like it because its most likely true. There are times where i have to some people what i think, but they do the opposite it just makes me want to say i told you so. But they dont want to hear that so i keep my mouth sure so that may they dont have to.So, i guess i would have to have the ear thing, because i have a strong and smart mind.

  40. i would be handicapped in a few different ways and i would force others to have handicaps as well. A few handicaps i would have would be athletic handicaps such as bags of birdshot. i would probably have a pretty ugly mask on too. A few of the handicaps that i would cause others to have would be time management and focus. i have a hard time doing things in a timely manner and tend to procrastinate a lot. I also have a hard time focusing if i have a class with friends. I think that the society that Hazel lived in with so called equality actually creates un-equality. for example if your walking down the street without any handicaps at all and see someone with a horrifically ugly mask, and heavy weights than you automatically know that they are very handsome and strong and it reminds you that you are the ugliest of them all and that you don't need a mask because you are already ugly enough.

  45. There is no way to discern what kind of handicaps I would have because there is no way to prove what my strengths and weaknesses are, no matter what I may believe they are. The same thing goes for how others would be brought to my level through handicaps, it cannot be clear what it would be. I wouldn't consider Hazel to be unlucky in this situation because she is a truly average being and no less than that. If I was to be put into the Harrison Bergeron universe as a true neutral with no handicaps then I would feel average, just as I was supposed to.

Even if the people have handicaps, won't everyone still know they are better than others by seeing that they have them? Pretty much every one above the age of 5 in todays world would have the handicap in their ear because the basic level in Harrisons world was extremely low. I know that I am not the strongest of everyone nor am I the least strong, or pretty, or fluent at speaking, so all of those haddicaps will also be added to me and most others of today. Hazels we can infer is very unintelligent and much envy others of having handdicaps because she is not good enough to have them.

  53. I would hate it, honestly! Why, because you wouldn't have any freedom. My strengths would be being strong from maybe the weights of beads. Some weaknesses would be not being my own person.

  54. I think if I lived in Harrison Bergerson's world, I would be given the ear piece because I think if I actually tried, and applied myself, I could be smart. Im supposed to wear glasses, so I think everyone would be given something to make us all equal if they had good eye sight. If I lived in this society, and was left unhandicapped, I think I would be afraid to express myself.

  55. Living in that world would be horriable because there would be no freedom to express your mind and be who you really are. There are different ways of being equal. Equal to me means treating everyone the same and with the same respect, not being the same, doing things the same way. The talents that would be taken away from me would be my singing ability, drawing ability, and spreading the word of God.

  56. I think that living in a world such as his with no rights to any man or women, would be terrible. Certain restraints to be put on me would be someting to keep me from completely using my arms and legs along with the wieghts. One thing i excell at is the urban sport of Parkour, which in this society, would benifit if i were to be free of my "disabilities."

  57. in a society like harison burgron i think people would want every one to be equal at the begining but once it happened and people saw how they were making every one equal they would dislike the idea of it, i would dislike the society because every one need a tallent and is unique in there own way and it gives them their personality

  58. If I were in that type of government, I think my handicaps would be (here comes my massive ego) I would have to wear ankle weights cuz I can run really fast and jump super high. I would probably have to wear a mask too cuz I'm smokin hot. My lips would have to be sewn shut because people tell me I'm a pretty funny guy. My hands would have to be balled up because I play piano, guitar, drums, and saxophone. And I would have to be put in a straight jacket cuz I got sweet moves. You might as well just kill me cuz I'm such a boss. All in all, that government would blow and I would probably try to kill myself. -Nevets

  59. I'm not sure what kind of handicaps I'd have. I guess I'd have sand bags and a thought disrupter. I think that because I'm athletic and I'm slightly above avraged intelligence. I'm almost jealous of Hazel in the sense that she can easily forget the bad. And I feel sorry for her bacause she can not remember the good. I admire her for being creative in such a noncreative world. She shows creativity when she suggests herself to be the Handicapper General and when she suggests to give that speaker a raise for trying his hardest. I wouldn't like living in such a society, and I believe that many poeple will speak out much like Harrison. I don't think they will try to become emperor, but I believe they would try to give power back to the people.

  60. I think I would be forced to hid my tallent with music. I can't play any instruments, but would not be able to sing as I normally do. People have told me that I have an amazing voice, I know I can do better than I have been. In this society though, I would never be able to sing how I want to anymore. I also wouldn't be able to draw or write anymore, both of which I love to do.

  64. i think others would need to be handicapped in physical ways to where they could only move so much because like everyone else i get my lazy days too. Though, living in such a society would have its negative side it would also have a positive side to it as well, no one would be better than anyone and kids or just people in general wouldn't be as big headed as they seem to be now.
